2024 IN REVIEW

We accompany families out of poverty through dignified work, and for good. We start by asking them where their greatest needs lie, and we address these challenges by co-designing solutions. Together, we remove barriers that stand in their way to success and finally, we invest in work for our families that provides a living income. Oftentimes, this is in the format of micro and small businesses that address needs in their communities, eliminating food deserts, enabling access to low-cost transportation and clean energy, and more. It also includes a growing number of small and mid-size recycling centers. What we're most proud of is that each income opportunity is dictated by our families, owned, and operated long term by them.

Our mission is

to accompany

families in Haiti

and beyond out

of poverty

through good,

dignified jobs.

Congratulations to our 2024 graduating class of families! These 14 family members have completed our workforce development program and received investments for their businesses and training for job opportunities that will result in a living income and financial independence. We're tremendously proud of their personal and professional growth especially as they navigated the last few years of the pandemic and unrests.

As graduates, they provide hope and inspiration for their neighbors and future WORK families. As community leaders, they will serve as mentors to new families and they will also continue to help us direct our investments in our communities in Haiti. We're excited to continue to watch them shine and to share their achievements with you.

We work with recycling and collection partners to address a stable demand and responsible sourcing practices that improves working conditions and income for workers.

With your support, we partnered with local centers in Hualien, Taiwan to place a subsidy on plastic waste, doubling collection volumes and helping collectors earn essential income.

In addition to implementing direct programming that accompanies families living in and around landfill communities in Haiti, Taiwan, and Ghana, through our First Mile Program, we also transform the systems that they work in by ensuring that they are included and have a voice in it.

First Mile was designed to improve the lives and livelihoods of informal workers in raw material supply chains by transforming systems to be inclusive of all workers. Today, while about 60% of recycled raw materials in the products you buy are made from materials collected by hand, some of them by the families we serve, they have very little say in how much and how they are paid and what their working conditions should be. Our work changes that by developing and lifting standards for how they work and what they're paid - we call this our responsible sourcing standards.

What this looks like in Hyderabad and Mumbai, India is that two of the largest recycling facilities now have a responsible sourcing program in practice that places a standard for how workers are treated, materials are collected, and drives improvements to sub-par working conditions and pay.

In Ho Chi Minh City and Da Nang, Vietnam, our work brought traceability to the value chain, allowing workings to be identified, lifted, and for their greatest needs to begin to be addressed.

We learned from our recyclables collectors and center owners in Haiti that our voices are more powerful together and to be relentless about speaking up when something is not right. Globally, over 20 million informal waste workers are responsible for collecting over 27 million metric tons of plastic waste, effectively removing them out of the environment. We believe that this work must be recognized, valued, and dignified.

First Mile is the key Implementation Partner for the Responsible Sourcing Initiative, where a global harmonized framework for responsible sourcing has been developed and is being piloted in 5 geographies, including in Jakarta, Indonesia.

Our work in Taiwan, centers around accompanying informal waste workers in Hualien, a popular tourist destination located on the east coast of Taiwan. There, the majority of our full time informal waste workers are individuals who entered this work after retirement to make ends meet.

Our team visited with Mr. and Mrs. Shen. At 82, they've been collecting recyclables as a team of 2 for the past 15 years. Each week, they make their rounds to local businesses, apartment buildings, and local community spaces to collect trash, and bring a value to them by sorting and organizing this material to sell to the local aggregator.

Their work helps to keep their neighborhood clean and helps them earn an income to sustain their daily needs. Our work addresses the demand for this material and to help improve Mr. and Mrs. Shen's working conditions.
